Vol. 350 No. 13

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

556.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda recruits (a) male and (b) female that he proposes to call for training in 1984.

Limerick East): As I indicated in reply to previous parliamentary questions, it is intended to achieve and maintain an overall Garda strength of 11,400 during 1984. To achieve that and taking account of anticipated wastage, a total of 149 male recruits have already been appointed to the force this year, a further 50 male and 25 female recruits are due to be appointed on 30 May and present plans are to appoint a further 100 males and 25 females before the end of the year. However, the precise numbers to be appointed will depend on the level of vacancies arising from resignations, retirements and deaths during the year.
