Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tax Arrears.

142.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of cases involving tax arrears that revenue officials have forwarded to the sheriff for collection in 1983-1984; the total amount of money involved, the number of cases in which arrears were collected and the amount of them; the number of sheriff orders which were withdrawn; and the amount of money involved in such cases.

The number of certificates issued under section 485 of the Income Tax Act, 1967, in the year 1983-84 was 108,661 representing at the time of issue a face value of £638,747,000. The total amount of this apparent magnitude is largely due to the liability being estimated in the absence of periodical returns in the case of PAYE-PRSI and VAT, and of accounts and other information in the case of income tax and corporation tax. These factors also account for the large number of certificates withdrawn and for the face value of those withdrawn, being respectively 41,190 and £248,446,000. Payments were made on foot of 8,791 certificates amounting to £32,168,000.
