Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tobacco Related Diseases.

182.

asked the Minister for Health the number of people who die each year from tobacco related diseases.

The causes of death which are regarded as smoking related are: coronary heart disease; diseases of other blood vessels (including stroke); bronchitis and emphysema; cancer of the lung, bronchus and trachea; other illnesses (including cancer of the mouth, larynx, oesophagus, pancreas, bladder, kidney and peptic ulcer).

The number of deaths over all age groups attributable to these causes is approximately 17,000 per year. While tobacco is involved as a cause in many of the deaths from these conditions, other factors such as environmental conditions and old age are also involved.
