Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Asthma Sufferers and Kidney Transplant Patients.

185.

asked the Minister for Health the assistance that is available from the State for asthma sufferers; if he is satisfied that this is adequate; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

186.

asked the Minister for Health if he proposes to include asthma in the list of long term illnesses.

187.

asked the Minister for Health if he will consider including patients who have received a kidney transplant in the scheme for those who suffer from long term illness.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 185, 186 and 187, together.

Persons suffering from asthma and transplant patients who are covered by a medical card obtain their necessary medication free of charge under the general medical service. All other patients are eligible for the refund of that part of the cost of necessary medication in excess of IR£28 for a month's supply. The question of including these conditions in the list of illnesses covered by the long term illness scheme has already been noted. Financial constraints do not permit this at present.
