Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Veterinary Services.

230.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will outline the total number of registered veterinary surgeons practising throughout the country and within each county; if he is satisfied that adequate professional veterinary services are available to all farmers in each area of the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On the basis of the Veterinary Council's records there were 1,678 veterinary surgeons in the Veterinary Register of Ireland on 1 January 1984. It is not possible to say how many of these are engaged in private practice or how many practitioners operate in the individual counties.

I am not aware of any inadequacy in the provision of professional veterinary services in any area of the country.
