Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Land Commission Housing Grants.

284.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the total number of farmers who were promised special housing grants by the Irish Land Commission since 1 January 1983; the total number who received grants; the total amount of money that they received; the number of farmers who were refused grants; if he will now ensure that any farmer who commenced work as a result of an indication from the Land Commission that he would be accommodated will now be paid the grant promised; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Since 1 January 1983 six housing grants were approved in the context of rearrangement schemes. These grants are available in exceptional circumstances only. The number of farmers who received grants in the period was four, and the amount involved was £6,000.

No farmer was refused a grant for which he was approved, provided the work was carried out to the satisfaction of the Land Commission. Any grant which has been approved will be paid when the work has been satisfactorly completed.
