Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Marine Studies.

309.

asked the Minister for Education if she will encourage schools in the Dublin area to include marine studies in relation to Dublin Bay on the school curriculum; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The syllabus for social and environmental studies of the primary schools' curriculum emphasises the prime importance of the physical environment in the child's education and there is a detailed programme for the study of fish and marine life. The programme is sufficiently flexible to facilitate the incorporation of marine studies in relation to Dublin Bay in schools in the Dublin area.

In the case of post-primary schools provision exists for appropriate elements of such studies in the syllabuses for geography and science at junior cycle level and in the syllabuses for geography and biology at senior cycle. These studies are encouraged by my Department.
