Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Employment Equality Act.

335.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is satisfied that the Employment Equality Act is operating fairly; if he is satisfied that it does not militate against employment; and if he will make a statement of the matter.

I am satisfied that, in general, the Employment Equality Act is operating fairly. However, while it is the case that many employers have adapted their personnel practices to comply with its provisions, notably in relation to direct discrimination, I believe that we have a long way to go in addressing the more elusive, indirect discrimination practices. For this reason I have arranged that a review of its provisions should be carried out and this review is proceeding. I have no evidence to suggest that the Act is militating against employment.
