Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Vehicle Tax.

353.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of revenue that was raised in the tax on mechanically propelled vehicles for the year 1983; and the amount of money spent by his Department on roads for the same year.

The amount collected in 1983 by way of tax on mechanically propelled vehicles was £84.5 million approximately. The total road grants paid by my Department for the maintenance and improvement of public roads totalled £117.5 million in 1983. In addition, approximately £3 million was spent on non-public roads last year under the Local Improvement Scheme.
