Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Kildare-Wicklow Water Scheme.

358.

andMr. Power asked the Minister for the Environment if he will sanction the Gormanstown group water scheme to serve areas of Kildare and Wicklow and based on a primary source at Woodenboley, County Wicklow which can be augmented from a Tober source, also in County Wicklow.

Following a thorough review of various proposals put forward since 1977 for the provision of a group water scheme at Gormanstown, County Kildare, officers of my Department recently met the group trustees and informed them that the proposal to blend water for the scheme from the Tober and Woodenboley sources in County Wicklow could not be approved for group scheme grants on technical grounds.

I would point out that proposals for a scheme using the Tober source only have been approved by Kildare County Council subject to conditions, and also by my Department. In addition FEOGA aid has been available since 1979 for a Tober-based scheme, although there is a danger that this may be withdrawn if work does not commence without delay. Furthermore, I am prepared to consider a request from the relevant sanitary authority for approval to payment of a special contribution towards the cost of headworks in a Tober-based scheme, should this arise. In all the circumstances, I consider that a Tober-based scheme presents the only prospect of progress at this stage and I would urge the group to concentrate its efforts on financing and providing such a scheme.
