Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - US Central American Policies.

361.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he advised Mr. Reagan, during his recent visit to Ireland, of the opposition to his policies in Central America; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

President Reagan was made aware during the visit of the concern felt by many Irish people about aspects of the US policy in Central America. In the course of his address at dinner in honour of President Reagan on 3 June 1984, the Taoiseach, having referred to the human rights situation in many Latin American countries, said "our people's deep concern is that these problems be resolved peacefully, by the people of the region themselves; in Central America along the lines proposed by the Contadora countries". He also expressed a welcome for the visit on 1 June of Secretary Shultz to Nicaragua and hoped that this might lead to restoration of normal relations between the two countries.

The Government's attitude to the problems of Central America remains that outlined in the Dáil on a number of occasions. Together with our partners of the Ten, we fully support the efforts of the Contadora Group to bring about a peaceful solution to the problems of Central America. The work of that group has recently entered a new phase, and we hope that the patient and unremitting efforts of that group will meet with success.
