Vol. 352 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Forest and Wildlife Service.

21.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if his Department has plans for the development of a comprehensive forest and wildlife training and research programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Forest and Wildlife Service of my Department have continuously provided a comprehensive training programme for supervisory and management staff, as well as on-the-job training for forest workers. Arrangements are in train to expand and improve training programmes according as the opportunity arises. A significant development in this context is the establishment of a training centre for forest workers at Mountrath, where it is planned to commence training courses in the near future for operators of various types of timber harvesting equipment.

Research in the silviculture and wildlife conservation spheres, for which considerable facilities are available, is undertaken by Departmental staff; in addition, the Department are funding timber technology research which is being carried out on their behalf by the IIRS.
