Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Naval Patrols.

390.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is considering any new initiative to diffuse the potentially dangerous situation arising from the ongoing conflict between salmon fishermen and naval patrols off the Donegal coast.

The purpose of naval patrols is to support the fisheries protection staffs of the Regional Fisheries Boards in enforcing salmon conservation laws. These laws are designed to protect the salmon stocks in the long-term interest of the fishermen themselves.

I am not aware of any ongoing conflict between salmon fishermen and naval patrols off the Donegal coast and in any event such conflict should not arise if the law is obeyed.
