Vol. 352 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mitigation of Fine.

131.

asked the Minister for Finance the circumstances in which a fine of £61,000 imposed for illegal bookmaking was mitigated; the extent to which the fine was mitigated; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the fine referred to was mitigated by them under their statutory powers and that in considering the matter they took account of the financial circumstances of the person concerned as well as the court's recommendation that mitigation should be granted. It is not the practice to disclose particulars of mitigation granted by the Revenue Commissioners for individual offenders but a very substantial sum was in fact collected in this case.
