Since Ireland is about 150 per cent self-sufficient in sheepmeat, it is essential that we have secure export outlets for our sheepmeat produce. The EEC sheepmeat regime, introduced in 1980, ensures that we enjoy free access to Community markets. If we are to maintain and increase our pressure on export markets, production must be geared to provide the type of lamb required, which is mainly lean, well-formed carcases.
Exports of lamb up to June 1984 are about 50 per cent up on the corresponding period last year. This is most welcome and is particularly important in the light of the expansion which has been taking place in our sheep population.
