asked the Minister for Agriculture the total number of dairy cows (a) in this country and (b) in each county in (i) 1960, (ii) 1970, (iii) 1980 and (iv) 1983; the total number of gallons of milk produced (a) in the country and (b) in each county in those years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following statement sets out the information requested in so far as it is available to my Department or the Central Statistics Office. It is not possible to give a breakdown of the number of gallons produced on a county basis.

The latest year for which official statistics, on a county basis of acreages under cereals and vegetables are available, is 1980 and the following table sets out the figures.

Official provisional estimates of total acreage under cereals and potatoes in 1984 are as follows (figures for other crops are not available).

The acreage under cereals this year showed an overall increase of about 3 per cent over 1983 but significant increases took place in winter wheat, oats and malting barley. Cereal yields are estimated to have been the highest on record. Vegetable and root crop acreages and yields are also expected to be higher than in 1983.
