Vol. 352 No. 8

Written Answers. - Mallow (Cork) School.

711.

asked the Minister for Education the proposals she has to solve the serious overcrowding problem at the post primary schools in Mallow; if she is aware that a number of applicants for enrolment this year were refused; and the proposals she has for the building of a new post primary for the Patrician Brothers.

I am not aware that the post-primary schools in Mallow have refused a number of pupils this year. I understand that the Vocational School and the Convent of Mercy School have, in fact, enrolled all pupils seeking places.

It has been agreed to provide additional accommodation in the post-primary schools in Mallow.

In the case of the Sisters of Mercy Convent School, the developed sketch scheme has been cleared and the manager is being advised on the preparation of the working drawings.

A new vocational school is proposed for Mallow, and a briefing meeting is being arranged with the County Cork Vocational Education Committee's design team to initiate the architectural planning of the project.

The Patrician Brothers have decided not to proceed with the building of a new school. At present discussions are taking place with the manager in relation to the extent and range of the accommodation to be provided in a new extension.
