Vol. 352 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Cork Water Supply.

387.

asked the Minister for the Environment when it is proposed to sanction payment of funds to Cork County Council to provide an alternative water supply for the people of Mitchelstown, which is urgently needed as the present water supply is badly contaminated and undrinkable and if he will make a statement on the matter.

393.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he would expedite the making of a capital grant available to Cork County Council to augment the Mitchelstown water supply from Kildrislane and if he is aware that the town supply coming from the Glenatlucky reservoir is seriously contaminated and polluted.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 387 and 393 together.

Preliminary proposals for the North East Cork Regional Water Supply Scheme Stage 1 were submitted to my Department on the 10 August 1984 and were approved on 26 September 1984. The council was advised to prepare contract documents or working drawings for Phase 1 which consists of the development of a water supply source at Kildrislane which will be used to augment the present Mitchelstown supply. It is now a matter for the local authority to proceed with the further planning of the scheme. The question of providing finance for this scheme will not of course arise until the scheme has been fully planned.

I understand from the local authority that the quality of the water supply from the Glenatlucky reservoir which has, in the past, given cause for concern is now satisfactory and is being monitored on a regular basis by the local authority.
