Vol. 352 No. 8

Written Answers. - Fish Quota Species.

425.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if the Government concede that Irish fishermen are worried that the Spanish fleet concern themselves with these very species of fish which Ireland's developing fleet is endeavouring to land to increase their performance; if the Government can give an assurance that quota species, now forming part of the Common Fisheries Policy and the basis of the developing Irish fishing industry, are not being negotiated with the Spaniards.

The Government are aware of the concerns of Irish fishermen about the accession of Spain to the European Community. At this stage of the negotiations, it is not possible to say what the final terms of accession in relation to the fisheries sector will be. I would like to assure the House, however, that the Government's aim in these negotiations will be to protect the interests of Irish fishermen and in particular to ensure that there will be no diminution in the quotas of those species of fish of interest to the Irish fleet.
