Vol. 352 No. 12

Written Answers. - Kerry Beach Material Removal.

347.

asked the Minister for Communications if he will arrange with Kerry County Council to make a prohibition order prohibiting the removal of sand and gravel from Ventry Strand near Dingle in County Kerry; if he will make a statement as to how his Department can supervise the implementation of such a prohibition order; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under section 6 of the Foreshore Act, 1933, I may make an order prohibiting the removal of beach material from any area of seashore if I am of the opinion that it is in the public interest to do so. Such an order is usually made at the request of the local authority which accepts responsibility for the enforcement of the order.

My Department have not received any reports suggesting that conditions at Ventry Strand are such as to warrant the making of a prohibitory order in respect of the area but I would of course be prepared to consider any representations which the county council might wish to make in the matter.
