asked the Minister for Justice the total amount spent to date on the design and construction of Wheatfield Prison in each of the years 1979 to 1983; and the projected expenditure for each year from 1984 until the project is completed.

, Limerick East): It is intended to locate a place of detention for 320 and a prison for 144, in which it is intended to accommodate women, on a site of approximately 33 acres at Wheatfield, Clondalkin, County Dublin.

The site was purchased in 1979. It is contrary to established practice to disclose the purchase price of property acquired by private treaty. No other expenditure was incurred in 1979.

As tenders have not yet been sought it would be contrary to established practice to disclose estimated projections of costs.

asked the Minister for Justice when it is expected that work will be completed on (a) the juvenile detention centre and (b) the new women's prison at Wheatfield.

, Limerick East): Work has been in progress uninterruptedly at Wheatfield since September 1980. The site has been serviced and perimetered and the services buildings have been completed.

Construction of the custodial buildings for the place of detention commenced on 3 September 1984 and the contract provides for work to be completed in 36 months.

As regards the women's prison, tender documents have been prepared by the Office of Public Works and tenders can be invited when resources permit.
