Vol. 353 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Skibbereen (Cork) Jobs Provision.

11.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the plans he has for the provision of industrial jobs at Skibbereen, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that two of the existing 3,000 sq. ft. small industry units in Skibbereen have been reserved for a small industry project. The remaining unit, together with IDA'S 11.7 acre site and the former Fastnet Co-Op. premises are being vigorously promoted for suitable industries.

Is the Minister aware of the chronic job loss in Skibbereen? Can he give any tangible evidence of his concern for the problem? Will he request the IDA to formulate a job rescue package for those west Cork towns severely hit by the job haemorrhage?

I am aware that there is a considerable jobs problem in the Skibbereen area. In the five years I have mentioned, unemployment in the area has increased by 90 per cent. That is below the national average. In the year 1983 unemployment figures in Skibbereen decreased. That was something that did not happen on a widespread basis throughout the country. However, there remains a significant unemployment problem in the area and that is why the IDA are continuing to promote actively the remaining unit and the 11.5 acre site they have there. The filling of the two units is an indication of the measure of confidence in the area. I hope that continues to be the case.
