Vol. 353 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dog Shelters.

551.

asked the Minister for the Environment the financial aid and support given to local authorities for the setting up and the running of dog control units.

My Department operates a scheme of grants which provides for the recoupment of 50 per cent of the expenditure of planning authorities on approved projects for the provision and operation of dog shelters, or in assisting others in their provision and operation. The scheme is intended to encourage planning authorities to avail of their discretionary statutory powers under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Acts, 1963 and 1976, to provide such facilities.

My Department has engaged the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in a consultative capacity for the purpose of advising and generally assisting planning authorities with their proposals for the provision and operation of dog shelters.

A provision of £89,000 is included in my Department's Vote in the current year in respect of shelters for stray dogs and cats.
