Vol. 353 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Lights.

38.

asked the Minister the Environment if he is aware that Dublin Corporation do not have sufficient funds to provide traffic lights at junctions which have been given priority on the corporation's programme; and that fatal accidents continue to occur at the road junctions in question and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not so aware.

The cost of providing traffic lights in the Dublin County Borough falls to be met from Dublin Corporation's own resources, including the rate support grant, supplemented by the block grant allocated annually by my Department. I understand from the corporation that in the current year they propose to spend £7.657 million from their own resources on road works. The corporation's block grant for 1984 amounts to £2.478 million. The determination of priorities and the selection of works to be undertaken with these funds, which exceed £10 million, is entirely a matter for the corporation.
