Vol. 353 No. 9

Written Answers. - Iran-Iraq War.

607.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware of reports of the killing and wounding of Iraqi prisoners of war by Iranian soldiers (details supplied); if he will make known his position in this regard to the Iranian Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of reports that a number of Iraqi prisoners of war were killed or injured in an incident at a prisoner of war camp in Iran on 10 October. These reports are a cause for considerable concern. The news that a mission is to be sent to the area by the UN Secretary General to inquire into the incident is therefore to be welcomed. When the exact circumstances of the incident have been clarified by the mission, consideration could be given to appropriate follow up action. The Government, and partners in the Ten, have consistently spoken out on the need in the context of the Iran-Iraq war for compliance with the principles and provisions of humanitarian international law in armed conflicts.
