Vol. 353 No. 9

Written Answers. - Traffic Census.

639.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline, in detail, the annual volume of traffic on all national primary routes, for the years 1960, 1970, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984, with particular emphasis on the traffic census as conducted earlier this year on these routes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

National primary routes were informally designated in 1969 and formally declared in June 1977 under the Local Government (Roads and Motorways) Act, 1974, (Declaration of National Roads) Order 1977. There was no traffic census in 1970 and data are instead provided for 1968, the year prior to the informal designation. Data are also provided for 1980. Since 1980, there has been no full census of traffic on national routes. A new traffic counting system is at present being installed with a view to carrying out a census during 1985.

The following table sets out the figures for 1968 and 1980:—
