Vol. 353 No. 11

Written Answers. - Redundancy Payments.

600.

asked the Minister for Labour if, as a matter of urgency, payment of all outstanding redundancy will be made to the former workers of Corcoran & Co. Ltd., Carlow.

On 26 September 1984, my Department received applications for payment of redundancy lump sums from the Redundancy Fund in respect of 78 employees of Corcoran & Co. Ltd., which had gone into receivership.

I understand that the receiver has sold the business and that the new owner has re-employed, or continued the employment of, a considerable number of the workforce. If there was continuity of employment under the Redundancy Acts in regard to the workers who were taken on by the new owner, these workers might not be entitled to payment of redundancy lump sums. There is a complex legal issue involved here which is under consideration, in consultation with the Attorney General's office.

My Department is arranging to pay redundancy lump sums to eligible employees of the company who were not taken on by the new owner. Inquiries are being made to identify these employees and payments will be made from the Redundancy Fund without delay as soon as this has been done.
