asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the factual results of the traffic census which was conducted on the Dublin/ Galway and the Dublin/Cork national primary routes this year; the dates the surveys took place; the number of staff employed thereon; the throughput of vehicles and any other relevant information; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department did not undertake a traffic census on either the Dublin/Galway or Dublin/Cork national primary routes in 1984. A new traffic counting system is at present being installed with a view to carrying out a census of traffic on national routes during 1985.

While local traffic censuses are undertaken from time to time by local authorities, the results of these censuses are not normally returned to my Department. I understand, however, that Kildare County Council conducted a traffic census on the Naas-Newbridge section of the N7 in September, and on the Leixlip/Maynooth/Kilcock section of the N4 in September and October. While the full results of these surveys are not yet available the following information has been supplied by the council:
