Vol. 354 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin City Drug Problems.

717.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is concerned that heroin is readily available in the Dorset Street area of the north inner city of Dublin; that four persons in particular are responsible for the heroin supply in that area; and if he will make a statement on the matter referring specifically to the action taken by the Garda to apprehend these individuals who are well known to the Garda Drug Squad as this is a matter of grave public disquiet.

718.

asked the Minister for Justice if he intends to respond to Deputy Gregory's request for a meeting with him to discuss the increasingly disturbing heroin problem in Dublin city which was tragically highlighted last weekend by the death of a 17 year old youth; and if, in view of the urgency of the problem, he will agree to a meeting at his earliest convenience.

Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 717 and 718 together.

I am naturally very concerned that heroin or any other illicit drug should be available on any of the streets of our cities and towns and I am assured by the Garda authorities, who are also very concerned, that every practicable measure is being taken to deal with this problem within the resources available to the force.

I cannot give specific information on measures being taken by the Garda in relation to drug pushing in the area mentioned because the publication of information of this kind could prejudice the success of Garda operations. I can say, however, that my information is that over the last month or so the Garda have arrested and charged five persons in the north city area with offences connected with the illegal possession and sale of drugs.

I will communicate my reply to the Deputy's recent letter to me in relation to a meeting as soon as possible.
