Vol. 354 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Pay.

738.

asked the Minister for Justice the plans he has in his Department for the payment of increases in pay and allowances to the Garda; the amount he intends to pay to each rank within the Garda; from when payment is due; the retrospective pay which will be made; the duration of any proposed payment; if any such payment will be the subject of any arbitration machinery; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): Members of the force up to and including the rank of chief superintendent will receive an increase of 2.5 per cent of basic pay from 1 December 1984, as part of the phasing-in of a special increase negotiated early this year at the Garda Conciliation Council in accordance with paragraph 4.2 (d) of the 1983 public service pay agreement. The balance of the increase — just over 2 per cent—will be payable from 1 September 1985. Allowances which are based on pay, such as those paid for duty at night and on Sundays, will also attract these increases. I have no other plans for increases.
