Vol. 354 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

640.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason a person (details supplied) in County Wexford who has applied for unemployment assistance was assessed as having means of £36 per week.

The person concerned was assessed with means of £36 weekly derived from the value of board and lodgings on his parents' holding. His means accordingly exceeded the maximum rate of unemployment assistance payable to him and his claim was disallowed. He appealed against the amount of means assessed against him and arising from contentions raised in the appeal the case was returned to the social welfare officer for further inquiries. These inquiries are not yet completed and when they are his case will be referred to an appeals officer for determination and his entitlement to unemployment assistance will be reviewed accordingly.

641.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether a person (details supplied) in County Wexford is entitled to unemployment benefit; if not, the reason; and the number of additional contributions he needs.

It is a contribution condition for entitlement to unemployment benefit that an applicant must have at least 26 contribution weeks registered with paid or credited contributions in the governing contribution year.

The person concerned, according to the records of the Department, has only 25 weeks of insurable employment during the relevant contribution period 6 April 1982 to 5 April 1983 and accordingly he is not entitled to unemployment benefit in respect of his claim which commenced on 5 November 1984.

He has however claimed unemployment assistance and his case has been referred to a social welfare officer for investigation of his means. When the inquiries are completed his means will be assessed and his entitlement to unemployment assistance will be determined accordingly.

642.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason a person (details supplied) in County Wexford was assessed as having means of £12 per week from exercising greyhounds when he does not.

The person concerned was assessed with means of £12 weekly derived from self-employment exercising greyhounds, on the basis of an investigation carried out by a social welfare officer.

However his case has been referred again for a further investigation and when all inquiries have been completed the assessment of his means will be reviewed and the rate of unemployment assistance payable to him will be determined accordingly.

643.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when unemployment assistance will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

The unemployment assistance claim of the person concerned was disallowed on the grounds that by failing to furnish full details of his means he failed to show that his means did not exceed the statutory limit.

He appealed against the disallowance and the case has been referred to an appeals officer for determination. His entitlement to unemployment assistance will be reviewed in the light of the decision of the appeals officer.
