asked the Minister for Education if she will state in respect of each year from 1976-77 to 1981-82, in relation to the following categories of teaching staff, (1) national, (2) secondary, (3) community, (4) comprehensive and (5) vocational; the number employed in each sector for each year; the total amount paid in salary for each year; and the total amount deducted from each category of teachers for each year in respect of (1) PAYE, (2) health contributions, youth employment levy and income levy and (3) superannuation.

The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the tables hereunder.

Contributions in respect of pay-related social insurance, health, youth employment and income levies are collected through one composite deduction. The Department does not keep separate records of these amounts. The youth employment levy did not become a component of this deduction until 6 April 1982 and the income levy was not introduced until 6 April 1983. The information in relation to teachers in secondary, comprehensive and community schools prior to 1979-80 is not readily available.

The information requested by the Deputy in relation to various deductions from salary is not available in my Department as salary payments, etc., are made locally by each Vocational Education Committee.
