Vol. 354 No. 7

Written Answers. - Inisturk Island (Mayo) Electricity.

655.

asked the Minister for Energy the proposals that exist to supply electricity to Inisturk, County Mayo, by the provision of a central generator; and when it is proposed to have such work carried out.

Following on my request to the ESB last May to re-evaluate the cost of electricity supply to Inisturk Island, County Mayo, it has now been decided to extend supply to the island through a central generating system.

Before work on the project itself can commence, it will be necessary for the islanders to form a co-operative to administer the electricity supply on the island and a suitably qualified person who will operate the system will have to be appointed. The ESB have informed me that they are having discussions with the islanders in regard to formation of a co-operative at present. Commencement of initial work on the project itself (construction of a suitable building to house the generation equipment and transport of the plant and machinery to the island) will depend on seasonal factors and availability of equipment. The ESB estimate that, assuming early formation of a co-operative by the islanders, the initial work could commence in early summer of 1985.
