Vol. 354 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Donegal Roads.

680.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any proposals from Donegal County Council for the up-grading of the following roads to national primary or secondary standards: Bridgend to Buncrana, Muff to Moville, Buncrana to Moville via Carndonagh; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The national primary and secondary road system is now generally regarded as established, having been formally declared in 1977 following a long process of evaluation and consultation. Earlier this year Donegal County Council requested that the route connecting Buncrana / Clonmany / Carndonagh / Moville / Muff be upgraded to national secondary status. This route, which is known as the Ring of Inishowen, comprises regional roads R.238 and R.240. The request was examined and the council was informed on 6 November 1984 that having regard to the criteria used to designate national roads reclassification was not warranted.

As was indicated in a reply to a parliamentary question from the Deputy on 22 November 1983 it is not proposed to reclassify the Bridgend to Buncrana road which is designated as regional road R.238. Requests for the reclassification of this road were received from Donegal County Council when the designation of national roads was being prepared. These requests were also examined and the council was informed that reclassification was not warranted having regard to the criteria used for the designation of national roads.
