Vol. 354 No. 7

Written Answers. - Food Quality Control.

801.

asked the Minister for Agriculture in view of the opinions expressed by major retailers at the recent ICOS conference on Irish food, that our quality control system is inadequate, if he considers it would be appropriate to impose more stringent quality control with Government aid.

The remarks referred to were aimed primarily at the food processing industry and it is a matter for the industry itself to ensure that its quality control standards meet the requirements of the domestic and export markets. My Department's main concern in relation to quality control is to ensure that food products are sound and wholesome and are processed under hygienic conditions. It also enforces regulations on the grading and packing of certain products such as fresh fruit and vegetables, potatoes and eggs.
