Written Answers. - Ministerial Travelling Expenses.

asked the Minister for Energy the amount paid in travelling expenses to each Minister of State in his Department from 1 November 1983 to 1 November 1984.

asked the Minister for Energy the amount paid to each civilian driver employed to drive the private cars of Ministers of State in his Department from 1 November 1983, to 1 November 1984.

Since both questions are related, I propose to reply to both together. The amount paid in travelling expenses by my Department to the Minister of State in the period in question was £6,402. Two civilian drivers were employed. One was paid £5,330.43 by my Department, the other was paid £6,158.84.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the amount paid in travelling expenses to each Minister of State in his Department from 1 November 1983 to 1 November 1984.

The total amount paid to the Minister of State in my Department was £22,306, broken down as follows: air and surface travel costs £6,018, subsistence costs £3,610 and mileage costs £12,678 in Ireland. This figure does not include recent or current travel, claims for which have not yet been finalised.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the amount paid to each civilian driver employed to drive the private cars of Ministers of State in his Department from 1 November 1983 to 1 November 1984.

Three civilian drivers were employed during the period 1 November 1983 to 1 November 1984 to drive the car of the Minister of State. One was employed for the period 14 November 1983 to 10 February 1984 and was replaced on 13 February for the remainder of the period. The third driver was employed from 22 November 1983 to date. The amount paid to each driver (salary and subsistence allowance) for the period 1 November 1983 to 1 November 1984 was £2,404, £7,594 and £10,094 respectively.
