Vol. 354 No. 11

Written Answers. - Salmon Fisheries.

600.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the up-to-date position on the recommendations made recently by the Irish Fishermen's Organisation concerning the requirements of the salmon fishermen; and if he will indicate in view of the present situation, the steps he proposes to take to find solutions for the deteriorating situation regarding salmon fisheries.

The regulations governing salmon fishing are kept under constant review and such steps as are considered necessary are taken in line with the policy of conserving salmon stocks for the future.

The arrangements to apply during the coming season are currently being reviewed by my Department and the recommendations of the Irish Fishermen's Organisation and other interested bodies will be taken into account in that review.

Regrettably some fishermen continue to ignore the laws and regulations in relation to salmon fishing to the detriment of the industry and their colleagues.
