Vol. 354 No. 11

Written Answers. - Income Tax Refunds.

605.

asked the Minister for Finance when a person (details supplied) in County Cork will be paid a tax refund.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the Inspector of Taxes, Tralee district, who deals with the taxpayers' income tax affairs, has been unable to trace receipt of a repayment claim in this case. In the circumstances, the inspector will now take up the matter directly with the taxpayer.

asked the Minister for Finance when a tax refund will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork; and the reason for the delay.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that a formal claim for repayment of tax was not lodged by the taxpayer until 10 December 1984. The inspector has now dealt with the claim and a cheque in settlement will be issued to the taxpayer shortly.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay in the payment of a tax refund to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that there have been no delays in dealing with this case. The taxpayer did not notify the inspector until 29 May 1984 that he had retired on 17 March 1984. Certain information which was required for the purpose of carrying out a review of his 1983-84 liability was requested by the inspector on 18 June but was not supplied by the taxpayer until 25 August. The review was carried out on 4 September and a cheque in settlement was issued to the taxpayer two weeks later. Subsequently, additional information was supplied by the taxpayer which necessitated a further review of the 1983-84 liability. This resulted in a further small repayment being made on 9 October last.

On the basis of the information at present available to the Revenue Commisioners, the taxpayer's tax-free allowances for the current year are likely to exceed his income for that year and accordingly it is not anticipated that any liability to tax for 1984-85 will emerge.

asked the Minister for Finance when a tax refund will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork; and the reason for the delay.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the inspector of taxes has been unable to trace receipt of an application for repayment in this case. A review of the taxpayer's liability for the year 1983-84 has been carried out and an overpayment has arisen. Details of the review have been sent to the taxpayer and a cheque in settlement will be issued shortly.

As requested by the taxpayer, a certificate of tax-free allowances transferring all his allowances for the current year to his wife for use in connection with earnings from her employment was issued to her on 5 December 1984.
