Vol. 355 No. 4

Written Answers. - Higher Education Fees.

570.

asked the Minister for Education if she will detail the increases that have taken place in university and third level college fees since she took office; and the increases, if any, which are anticipated in 1985.

In the institutions designated under the Higher Education Authority Act, 1971, education fees increased by 25 per cent in the 1983-84 academic year and by 20 per cent in 1984-85. In the third level VEC colleges, prior to 1983-84 course fees varied considerably but in that year a standard rate of course fee was introduced. Fees were increased by 20 per cent in 1984-85. No decision has been taken yet in relation to the level of fees for 1985 but it is expected that fees will increase somewhat above the rate of inflation.
