Vol. 355 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Broadcasts.

1.

asked the Minister for Communications if he has given instructions to any of his officials to jam any radio broadcasts intra-State or extra-State in the Northern part of the country.

Would the Minister confirm that it is illegal to jam broadcasts in Ireland?

There is no easy answer to that question. The facts are that legally licensed services can, from time to time, get permission from my Department to test other frequencies and very often that testing can lead to jamming or interference. I want to make it clear that I have not authorised the jamming of illegal stations but it is my intention to deal with them by legislation in the very near future.
