Vol. 357 No. 4

Finance Bill, 1985: First Stage.

I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to charge and impose certain duties of customs and inland revenue (including excise) to amend the law relating to customs and inland revenue (including excise) and to make further provisions in connection with finance.

Question put and agreed to.

When is it proposed to take Second Stage?

Subject to agreement between the Whips, it is proposed to take Second Stage on Tuesday, 16 April 1985.

When will the Bill be published?

I hope it will be published early in the Easter recess.

How long does the Minister propose to give to Second Stage and what period of time will elapse between the Second Stage and the Committee Stage?

The question of when the Committee Stage will be taken will arise at the conclusion of Second Stage.

It is important to have a timetable now. Is it not reasonable to ask how long it is proposed to allocate to Second Stage?

It is not reasonable to ask the question at this stage.

I appreciate Deputy O'Kennedy's concern, but this is a matter that the Whips should decide between them. I, too, would be very anxious that sufficient time be given to Second Stage and that adequate time elapses also between Second Stage and Committee Stage.

By what date has the Bill to be passed?

Dún Laoghaire): The Second Stage must be passed by 25 April 1985.

The Chief Whip has the information.

(Dún Laoghaire): That is my job.

Can the Minister for Finance say whether it is intended to introduce a supplementary or additional set of budget tables to replace the totally discredited set of tables produced on budget day?

Since there was no totally discredited set of figures the question does not arise.

Second Stage ordered for Tuesday, 16 April, 1985.
