Vol. 358 No. 6

Written Answers. - Assistance for Dyslexia Sufferers.

584.

asked the Minister for Health if there is any assistance available from his Department for those who find themselves unable to gain employment as a result of suffering from dyslexia.

There is no specific allowance payable to persons who are unable to gain employment as a result of suffering from dyslexia. The disabled persons maintenance allowance is payable to persons who because of a disability are unable to undertake work of a kind which if they were not suffering from the disability would be suited to their age, experience and qualifications. It is the degree rather than the nature of the disability that determines eligibility for this allowance. The allowance is subject to a medical examination and a means test.
