Vol. 358 No. 6

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

610.

asked the Minister for Education if the degree course, Baccalaureate in Theology and Arts, at May-nooth College is recognised for the purposes of a higher education grant; and, if not, if she will have this particular course included when she reviews the operation of the higher education grants scheme.

Non-secular courses, i.e. those which in content and character are essentially courses in religious studies, have not been accepted for purposes of the higher education grants scheme since the scheme was introduced in 1968. However, as indicated in my replies to Questions Numbers 662 on 31 October 1984 and 685 on 12 December, 1984 I have the whole question of theology-divinity courses in third level institutions at present under consideration and I should hope to be in a position to make a statement in the matter in the not too distant future.
