Written Answers. - Dublin Traffic Wardens Statistics.

721.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of traffic wardens employed in the Dublin area; the total revenue accruing from parking offences; and the amount of expenditure including salaries and other expenses incurred by wardens for 1984 and to date in 1985.

109 full time and 16 part time wardens are at present employed in the Dublin area.

The expenditure in 1984 on pay, allowances, and equipment of traffic wardens in Dublin was approximately £993,000. The corresponding expenditure for the period 1 January 1985-30 April 1985 was approximately £311,000. These figures do not, however, include any sum in respect of pension liability or overhead costs.

The total amount of fines-on-the-spot paid in Dublin in 1984 and in the first four months of 1985 was £1,486,000 and £450,000, respectively. The total amount of fines imposed by the court throughout the country under the Road Traffic Acts which was lodged in 1984 to the Motor Taxation Account of the Department of the Environment was £3,154,000. The corresponding figure for the first four months of 1985 is not readily available. Records are not kept in such a way as to isolate the amount included in the figure of £3,154,000 which relate to court fines for parking offences in Dublin.

Limerick East): Provisional figures prepared for inclusion in the report on crime to be issued by the Garda Commissioner for the year ended 31 December 1984 show that the total number of fine-on-the-spot notices issued for parking violations in the Dublin area was 529,470 — 499,352 were issued by traffic wardens and 30,118 by gardaí. Of these 224,240 were paid leaving a balance of 305,230 unpaid. These can be accounted for as follows: Court proceedings initiated (i.e. summonses issued), 190,859; Notices cancelled, 16,489; Court proceedings pending (i.e. summonses not yet issued), 88,311; Spoiled notices, 9,571.
