Vol. 358 No. 13

Written Answers. - Craft Industry Promotion.

585.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is satisfied that there is sufficient promotion of the craft industry to ensure the retention of traditional crafts.

I am satisfied that there is sufficient promotion of the craft sector to ensure the retention of traditional crafts.

In 1984 the Industrial Development Authority and Shannon Development approved a total of 68 craft projects with associated projected potential employment of 162. In addition, a number of craft centres have been provided at seven strategic locations throughout the country.

An important aspect of the development of the sector is the marketing of craft products. Córas Tráchtála provides marketing assistance to the Crafts Council and the ever increasing number of foreign buyers at the Crafts Council's annual trade fair is evidence of the close co-operation between the council and Córas Tráchtála. At the 1985 fair total sales of craft products amounted to £5.65 million of which £3.1 million were accounted for by export orders.

Recognising the importance of providing young crafts people with experience in both craft and business skills, the Crafts Council of Ireland has, since 1981, successfully operated a post graduate training course at Kilworth, County Cork.

I have also taken other measures aimed at the promotion and development of the craft sector. I have given Deputy Eddie Collins, Minister of State at my Department, special responsibility for the development of the sector, including responsibility for the Crafts Council of Ireland. A central feature of the Minister of State's role is to ensure that the activities of all the State agencies concerned are co-ordinated to achieve maximum development of the craft industry. I have also appointed to the management committee of the Crafts Council senior management from the State agencies concerned with the crafts sector.
