Vol. 358 No. 13

Written Answers. - Garda Training Scheme.

674.

asked the Minister for Justice the steps that have been taken by his Department to provide a new training scheme for Garda recruits; the details of any such proposed new scheme; and when it is intended that it will become operative.

Limerick East): The training needs of the Garda Síochána, from recruit intake stage up to and including the courses appropriate to senior levels, are at present being examined by a committee appointed some months ago by the commissioner, with my approval. The committee have been asked to give priority attention to a review of recruit training and I am advised that the committee hope to be in a position to provide an interim report on this matter later in the summer. In the circumstances it is not possible at this stage to give details of any proposed new scheme. I hope that it will be possible to implement the recommendations of the committee at a very early date following receipt of their report.
