Vol. 359 No. 1

Written Answers. - Galway Industries.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the action he will take to protect the jobs of 70 workers at Irish Metal Industries Ltd., Galway, who are now on a three day week because of the dumping of copper pipes on the Irish market.

Based on the latest import statistics available, i.e. up to the end of March 1985, practically all of the imports of copper tubing under Tariff Headings 74 07-100 and 74 07-900 have been of Community origin and, as the Deputy is no doubt aware, the concept of dumping does not apply within the context of the unified Community market any more than it would apply to trade within the market of an individual member state.

However, if there is evidence that any aspects of the trading associated with these Community imports comes within the activities prohibited by Articles 85 and/or 86 of the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community, it is open to the Irish manufacturing company to take the matter up direct with the Commission of the EEC.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is aware that an IDA owned factory at Mervue, Galway, formerly occupied by Crown Controls Ltd. has been left unattended and now hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage has been caused by vandals; and the action he proposes to take to put this building into suitable condition for letting or for sale as an industrial unit.

Since being vacated by Crown Controls Limited, the Industrial Development Authority has been actively promoting its factory at Mervue, Galway, for suitable industrial projects. A firm of security contractors have been engaged during that time to protect the premises. However, in spite of this, the factory has been severly damaged by vandals.

The IDA are currently at an advanced stage of negotiation with AnCO concerning the letting of the factory to AnCO for use as a training centre. The question of making good the damage caused to the buildings will be considered in the context of these negotiations.
