Vol. 359 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Legal Status of Children.

4.

asked the Minister for Justice when the Government intends to sign and ratify the European Convention on the legal status of children born outside of marriage; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

(Limerick East): The question of ratification of this convention will be considered following the enactment of the proposed Status of Children Bill, details of which were given in a memorandum published recently.

This is one of those questions which has been overcome by events. Will the passing of the Bill as published enable the Government to sign the convention?

That is a matter for the debate on the Bill going on at the moment.

(Limerick East): I am advised that it would enable us to sign the convention if passed in its present form.
