Vol. 359 No. 3

Written Answers. - Lady Lane (Waterford) Day Unit.

728.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that a number of people who were employed under the teamwork scheme at the Sacred Heart unit of the day-care centre, Lady Lane, Waterford, have been let go although they were told that they would be employed for a year when taken on at the beginning of this year; if he considers it appropriate that personnel who were guaranteed employment for a certain period of time should be let go in this manner; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

732.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that a number of people employed under the teamwork scheme at the Sacred Heart unit of the day-care centre, Lady Lane, Waterford, have been let go although they were told that they would be employed for 12 months when they were taken on at the beginning of this year; and, if, in view of the hardship that this decision will cause for persons attending the day-care centre, he will indicate the alternative arrangements being made for staffing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 728 and 732 together. It is not correct to say that young workers employed at the Sacred Heart day unit, Waterford, under my Department's teamwork scheme, have been let go. My Department approved the employment under teamwork of two young workers at the unit for 1985. Through a misunderstanding at the time of the terms of the approval, the unit authorities recruited six young persons.

When my Department became aware of the situation which had arisen, the matter was investigated in conjunction with the Department of Health. I am pleased to say that I have now approved a grant to cover the employment for 1985 of the six workers involved. The unit authorities have been informed to this effect.
