Vol. 359 No. 4

Written Answers. - North Atlantic Route Aircraft.

134.

asked the Minister for Communications if his Department supports the operation of two engine aircraft on the North Atlantic route: and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Until recently the operating capabilities of twin engined aeroplanes have prevented their use on North Atlantic routes. However, the recent introduction of large long ranged twin engined aeroplanes has changed this situation. A study has been undertaken by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on extended range operations by such aircraft and draft operational and airworthiness criteria have been developed and have been presented to member states of ICAO for consideration. These draft criteria are at present being studied by my Department but no conclusions have yet been reached in the matter.
